The Project
Blue Zones Project is a community well-being improvement initiative designed to transform local environments for healthier living options. Blue Zones are areas around the world where people live measurably longer lives with lower rates of chronic disease and a higher quality of life through natural movement, eating wisely, a sense of purpose, and social connections. These communities are shown to improve health and wellbeing, reduce healthcare costs and increase civic engagement.
Our Role
Equity Policy Solutions served as a Built Environment Policy expert to the Blue Zones team in Coachella, CA. Working with the local team and national experts, we conducted a baseline assessment of existing built environment policies and environments; engaged stakeholders to understand goals and gaps; and created a Blueprint and a detailed Action Plan with evidence-based recommendations to improve health through the built environment. Specific policy initiatives included Safe Routes to Schools and Parks, Complete Streets, shade to reduce extreme heat impacts, transit stop expansion, expansion of public art, wayfinding systems, and increased housing affordability.
